Editor's note:
Handspun and handwoven cushion cover by the Fieija Tribe in the heart of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas region. The wool is 100% Siroua undyed wool, from an endangered sheep living in a volcanic massif with very long wool fibers. The back is made of 100% cotton woven in Morocco.
Provenance:
Increasing amount of wool, as found in rugs and other goods in the Marrakech souks, are imported from Australia, New Zealand, and Boliva, due to better quality/price ratio. However, on the Siroua mountains, and on the plateaus of the Anti-Atlas between the Toubkal range and the desert, you'll find a local, endangered, breed of sheep - the Siroua sheep. Traditionally, these sheep provided the wool for the distinct carpets of the Aït Ouaouzguit tribes.
With the goal of preserving the Siroua breed, traditional practices, and guaranteeing an income to the breeders, Maroc Inédit and Memòri Lab have partnered to find the best flocks to supply quality fleeces to use towards cushion covers, and develop the wool shearing and sorting processes that would allow the breeders to adapt in the modern wool industry.
